CHICHICASTENGO is the name of a famous town in Guatemala (spelled different ways) .  Guatemala is known for its textile art, but this example is out of the ordinary in that it was clearly painted by someone untrained, nor is it one of the traditional colorful molas and other embroidered textiles.  This appears to be a unique painting titled, SOLDA, done by the untutored hand of a folk artist, with the most basic of materials, including the coarsely woven thin cloth on which it is painted. It was likely painted as something that could be sold inexpensively, and might have actually been a portrait of a specific woman named Solda.  The type of paint resembles watercolor staining, rather than a refined oil or acrylic paint.  The image has a woman in a broad brimmed hat with red band holding her right arm upright holding some object with a radiant sun on it,  and was intended to hang by means of a wood bar put thru the channels at the top and bottom.  This example measures approx 17" H x 22" w.  There are no tears, no stains or flaws on the front. NOTE: I am listing two other paintings on cloth of different subjects, so pleased CHECK OUT EBAY STORE: SAGANGUY ART & ANTIQUES.
