IMPERIAL JAPANESE ORDER OF THE RISING SUN (旭日章 KYOKUJITSU SHO), VIII CLASS, WITH BUTTON-HOLE ROSETTE, IN FITTED LACQUER CASE OF ISSUE.

Silver order in the form of three paulownia leaves with three stems of three, five and three flowers, on laterally pierced ball suspension; the reverse plain with a four-character inscription meaning ‘Order of Merit Decoration’; on original ribbon with fittings; with button-hole rosette; in original silk lined lacquered case of issue. The Order of the Rising Sun was Japan’s first decoration, being instituted by Council of State Decree on 10 April 1875 in eight classes to reward both military and civilian merit, the class awarded depending upon the rank of the recipient.
