The Worcester Royal Porcelain Co Ltd

Earthenware manufacturers at the Warmstry House, Worcester 1751 – 2009

Royal Worcester was established in 1751 and is believed to be the second oldest remaining English porcelain brand still in existence today. Technically, the Worcester Royal Porcelain Co Ltd (Known as Royal Worcester) was formed in 1862. The company has followed the pattern of other leading English porcelain brands, with increasing success during the 18th & 19th centuries, then a gradual decline in the 20th century, especially the latter half.

In 1751, John Wall, a physician, and William Davis, an apothecary, persuaded a group of 13 businessmen to invest in a new factory at Warmstry House, Worcester.

In 1783 the factory was purchased by Thomas Flight, who allowed his son John Flight to run the company. In 1788 George III, following a visit to the company, granted it a royal warrant, and it became known as ‘Royal Porcelain’. In addition to the warrant granted by King George, royal warrants were also issued by George (Prince of Wales) in 1807, and Charlotte (Princess of Wales) in 1808.

In the 20th century, Royal Worcester’s most popular pattern was ‘Evesham Gold’ (depicting the autumnal fruits of the Vale of Evesham)

In 1976 Royal Worcester merged with Spode.

The Company went into administration in 2008…….the last trading date for Royal Worcester was 14th June 2009.

In 2009 the brand name and intellectual property was acquired by Portmeirion Pottery Group.
