TWO HISTORIC WAR IMAGES
D-DAY: GERMAN DEFENCES ON 'UTAH BEACH
6 JUNE 1944.

Seen here plan of the western and eastern stretches of the beach and sea wall at 'Utah', the codename for the area south of Les Dunes de Vatreville on the right flank of the Allied line, which was also allocated to the American assault forces. Assault Force U, supported by 12 convoys of 856 vessels, met with much more favourable conditions than their colleagues at 'Omaha'. Losses to the 4th Infantry Division, which put its men onto the 'Utah' beaches first, amounted to only 12 men. By noon on the 6th, Force U had cleared the beach and was moving to secure the northern and southern flanks.
