Suffolk Artist William Benner Late C19th Sepia Watercolour Southwell Minster- Cathedral Nottinghamshire

William Roger Benner 1884- 1964 was born in Nottingham and trained as a draughtsman. He later studied at Nottingham School of Art but then immediately served in WWI. After the war he returned to Nottingham as an art master at High Pavement School and after 27 years, in the mid 1950s, he retired to Blythburgh, in Suffolk. There he became an artist in oil and watercolours and a teacher and a member and exhibitor at Ipswich Art Club 1960-1964 also a member and exhibitor at the Great Yarmouth & District Society of Artists 1958-1964. Over the years he exhibited at Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery; the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours.


This mid 20th century watercolour on darker, textured paper shows a quite close study shows Southwell Minster which is also known as the cathedral, painted from the Cemetery gardens, with green trees and grass. Beautifully observed with lovely detailing. Of Signed in the bottom right corner, framed in white covered slim wood with scrolled edging and mounted in cream. The picture is in good condition but there is slight foxing to the mount to the left side, please see photos.
