I use the following system for covers to give an accurate and consistent grade.

Superb: Clean, perfect postmark clear of stamp. Stamp upright/almost. 

Very neat address, which may be typed or handwritten. Cover feels firm, unless otherwise described.

Extremely Fine: Clean, postmark may be less than complete, but still completely legible. Neat address, which may be less attractive than higher grade. Feels firm, minor faults such as corner bumps, small marks may be present. 

Very Fine: First glance looks a nice cover. Postmark feint and difficult to read in part. Closer inspection may show stamp angled, more noticeable marks, tears more significant but could be disguised/repaired. Address not as neat as hoped. Folds are old and not very obvious
