Sir Isaac Newton became the first Master of the Mint in 1699. It was on September 21, 1717 that his report proposed a modification in the bimetallic ratio of gold to silver coins. The value of the gold guinea was reduced to a fixed ratio of 21 silver shillings.
By doing such Newton had created the first gold standard, and the forerunner of other gold standards to follow. Eventually however, with the economic crises associated with world wars, in conjunction with the Great Depression, gold standards were abandoned, until the Bretton Woods Agreement of 1944 established a reduced and highly stringent role for gold, most principally for purposes of international finance. Such continued until 1971 when the economic confluence of inflation and recession resulted in monumental 'stagflation' thereby compelling then American President Richard Nixon to sever the relationship between gold and the American Dollar.
