I've owned this for about 10 years, waiting for it's turn on the project table. This is the finest most fully featured of the Teac "C" line of decks. Powered on and no tape movement. Not surprising on a 43 year old deck. I proceeded with the following items. Both belts and both idler tires were replaced. Old tires were still complete, but had developed small cracking on the rubber surface. (see pics)  Any old grease was removed and new grease applied. Only 1 pinch roller on this Teac, and it was cleaned as were the heads. Original lights and indicators all still work. All switches and buttons still operate. Both signal meters operate when playing recorded audio.                                                                                                                                                                                                        The cassette deck opened with no damping to it. Just a quick hard "clack", and it was wide open. This turned out to be from a missing spring which dampens the door opening. I replaced this spring with another from a hardware store. It now prevents the door flapping open, but the door does not open completely on it's own. Enough to replace a cassette tape, but really needs to drop open another 1/2 inch.
The issue that has me stumped is the rewind behavior. Play, pause, stop, and fast forward, all operate correctly. When rewinding a 90 minute Maxell tape, the tape will sometimes stop winding when it's very close to done. Here's the strange part. Even though
the tape stops moving, the drive spindles keep turning as if they no longer are engaging with the sprockets of the cassette. You can see this as it happens. Pressing stop and rewind again will not correct it doing this. It will still not be engaged. Turn the tape around and every thig works again. The rewind issue only shows up when getting very near the end of tape. No belts or rollers are slipping anywhere that I see. All belt paths and roller surfaces were cleaned with alcohol when I replaced the rubber. Maybe a clutch issue with old felt? They look clean, but maybe just too old to act 100%. It can be changed, but that's farther in than I can to go with this item. So it's for sale as "parts or repair," rather than "used".
Questions welcome!  If you're not able to purchase this Teac C-3rx, give me a few days. The little bit nicer one is on the bench now! Check out the Tapeheads website. Several ex- Teac/Tascam service techs rate this deck as one of their all time favorites.
