The Blamed has been pointing the way out of the hardcore doldrums for the last few years, and with the release of Give Us Barabbas they have found the exit at last. Unfortunately, guitarist and vocalist Matt Switaj decided to leave the band when this record was completed. The good news is that Give Us Barabbas is the definitive statement from The Blamed, answering and echoing the difficult conundrums brought up on the current line-up's previous two efforts, Germany and Isolated Incident. The bad news is that the particular chemistry of The Blamed has been altered significantly. Future angst aside (the band is continuing on as a three-piece for the time being,) there is a lot to enjoy on Give Us Barabbas. The disc as a whole has the feel of a junkyard worth of spare parts, balanced precariously on a fulcrum of post-punk/hardcore simplistic rage and honest to goodness instrumental proficiency. Yes, the punk rock roots are there, and yes, it's plenty 'hard' for anyone, but it is intelligent, artistic, challenging, and imaginative as well. The vocals range from atonal screams to semi-melodic screams to almost poppy precision. Vocals flavors of Janes Addiction clash up against guitar riffs that could have come off of The Cars' Candy-O, and then the whole things swirls into a chaotic Dead Kennedys melee with a Fugazi attitude. Call it hardcore with soul, or punk with brains, or even art-rock with rage, but definitely check it out. Even the thoughtful lyrics that artfully bring confrontational ideas and redemptive offerings simultaneously defy the modern punk and hardcore scene. The Blamed is one of those rare hard music groups daring to stretch themselves and their fans and Give Us Barabbas is a wonderful piece of work. This is their sixth recording, released in 2002 on Solid State, and packaged in a double gatefold digi-pak.
