This is an authentic (NOT a modern reprint), genuine beautifully printed 1974 photogravure plate (also known as héliogravure) by the internationally famous photographic artist Irina Ionesco. This LARGE 12x16 FOLIO SIZE photogravure was originally issued as part of a now rare portfolio, engraved and printed in high quality photogravure for Irina Ionesco by Sté Nlle des éditions du Chene, in Paris, France in 1974. Pronounced grain structure and moody atmosphere abound in this engaging image - trademark characteristics of Ionesco's finest work.

In the early 1970s Irina Ionesco appeared unexpectedly in the Parisian art photography community with a collection of unique and erotic black and white photographs. The photographs were mostly portraits of women partially-dressed in elaborate costumes, surrounded by eclectic props - many projecting a moody "gothic" feel. While some of the portraits are fairly straightforward, some include elements that are distinctly fetishistic or give at least a fetish undertone to the work. In those early 1970's photographs, the women are often wearing lavish costumes, amid props that hint of symbolic meaning. Sometimes partially dressed in erotic poses...the women are as if unimpressed and unconcerned by the viewer’s attention...giving a distinct "aura" to Ionesco's photographs.

By 1974 Ioneso's work was on display in the Nikon Gallery in Paris, France. Her photographs were featured in a variety of art and fashion magazines, and sold in galleries throughout Europe and Asia where she became quite popular.
Iconic art images she made of her daughter Eva (now famous in her own right as an actress) exponentially increased her rising fame. Around this time she was hired by Vogue and other magazines to shoot fashion spreads which she continued to do in addition to her artistic work. Remarkably, Ionesco rose to the photographic art world's highest levels in an extraordinarily short period of time. Today her work is held in important collections throughout the world and her images in any form are highly sought after by collectors. For more information simply "Google" her name.

ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE:  Photogravure is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate combined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink to be transfered to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching, engraving or lithograph. Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic print making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected (when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and portfolio projects, but due to it's significant expense and labor, the process is rarely seen today. From Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the world's most renown photographic masters have published their images in the rich photogravure process.
