Finephoto is pleased to offer an authentic, genuine (NOT a modern reprint)
vintage 1961 photogravure plate (also known as a héliogravure print)
produced from the original negative/print of the renown British
photographer Bill Brandt. This
sheet fed photogravure print was originally issued as part of a now
scarce photography compilation assembled in 1961 Switzerland - it was
engraved and printed in beautiful two sided photogravure by the Swiss engraving
house of Heliographia S.A., Lausanne.
Whether you collect vintage photogravure prints or are simply looking
for extraordinary home or business decor, this authentic vintage
photogravure plate will frame and display beautifully!
This photogravure plate
is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE
OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered
serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under
magnification this plate shows a tight "honeycomb" cell structure, excellent
pressing of ink and a wide range of tone - all indicative of a high
quality sheet fed gravure print. The watermark word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print.
Note: Please note there is gravure printing on the reverse side of this vintage print from the original dual sided issue.
About Bill Brandt: Born in 1904, Bill Brandt became Britain's most influential and internationally admired photographer of the 20th century. The striking images Brandt created are essential works and have made him a monumental figure in photographic art history. His innovations expanded the medium of photography and gave his work a timeless quality. Brandt considered his nude studies as his favorite work and is acknowledged to have taken the genre into ground breaking new areas, creating abstractions in which the landscape of the body meets the landscape of the natural world.
Many of his "distorted" nudes were made with an old wooden and brass camera he found in a second hand shop. The camera had a wide angle lens with a pinhole aperture and like nineteenth-century cameras it had no shutter. The acute distortion produced by the lens created an abstract perspective in his subsequent landscapes and nudes. The images he created with the unnatural perspective, unusual viewpoints and the use of strange lighting shocked people at the time, but forever broadened the boundaries of imagery. Most of his influential work with nudes were made in Normandy and on the Sussex Coast.

is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper
plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by
pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which
has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the
actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate
combined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink to
be transfered to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to
the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true
continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional
silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching,
engraving or lithograph.
Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately
rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic
print making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected
(when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and
portfolio projects, but due to it's significant expense and labor, the
process is rarely seen today. From
Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the
world's most renown photographic masters have published their images in
the rich photogravure process. OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU: We don't just want to meet your expectations, we want to exceed them with each and every purchase! We
