Why is Siberian Chaga better than Chaga from other regions?

The answer is short – it is not.

Chaga has a long history of use in Russia and over there it is found mainly in the coldest regions of Siberia. When Chaga became ‘hot’ in the slipstream of the recent superfood hype, the term ‘Siberian Chaga’ added an exotic not to say romantic/authentic touch to the product. But in fact it is mere marketing, playing the emotions of the potential customer.
Chaga develops best in very cold regions and it appears that the more harsh the climate and the swings in temperature, the better the therapeutic quality of the Chaga. However, these conditions are not only found in Siberia, but also in e.g. Finland, the Chinese Changbai region, N-Korea and parts of the N-American continent. Harsh climate + birch forest = high Chaga potential!

In fact, when judging a Chaga product the same rules apply as when judging a mushroom supplement in general (see the first FAQ): check the supplement facts label. Chaga’s main bioactives are, according to science, beta-glucans and betulin / betulinic acid. Look for these on the supplement facts label and you can objectively compare products against each other. Siberian Chaga does not have better therapeutic properties or a higher amount of bioactives as a standard.

The extraction technology used to make the bioactives bioavailable is actually more important. This is obvious when comparing e.g. Russian-made extracts with Chinese extracts.

The Chinese do everything according to their customers wishes, which makes the quality range from very low to very high. Russians use only hot water extraction and are therefore not producing full spectrum extracts (also see the next FAQ). This means the natural synergy found in a full-spectrum product will be missing.

Russian producers are also forced by the Russian Pharmacopeia to use the ‘Chromogenic complex’ as the quality standard for Chaga. This ‘Chromogenic complex’ is an outdated concept from the 1950s which reveals nothing about Chaga’s chemical composition. It is useless as a valuation tool from the modern point of view.

See, as an example, the opening paragraph of this Russian journal – (Translated from Khimiko-Farmatsevticheskii Zhurnal, Vol. 44, No. 3, pp. 35 – 37, March, 2010) where the ‘chromogenic complex’ is described as ‘ a vague concept with no definition of its chemical composition’ and products and protocols based on that (meaning: all Russian Chaga extracts) are described as ‘severely out of date’ and ‘not respond(ing) to current requirements ‘. This article is written by Russian Chaga producers/exporters that apparently want to spread their wings and be able to compete with non-Russian Chaga, using modern scientific concepts, just like the rest of the world.

This dense birch dwelling mushroom has been given many different names, but more importantly, has gotten the repertoire to earn them.  Chaga is an amazing and capable herb that we have been blessed to have access to.

The nutrient makeup of Chaga is rather impressive.  Its lineup exceeds many of those in a similar class for the reason that it feeds on the actual living tree, as opposed to the ground.  Trees, both individual specimens and colonies, have impressive “roots” in longevity.  Some colonies of trees have manifested their beginnings over 200,000 years ago, while there are even individual trees that date back to almost 3.000 years ago existing on Earth as we speak.  Needless to say, the trees have got some serious links to both longevity and the nutrients required to achieve it.  The unfortunate fact in this circumstance is that we can’t eat a tree, nor can we root ourselves in the ground and mimic them, so while the birch is indigestible, and we’re still human, chaga comes to the rescue.


Chaga successfully, shall we say, “milked” the divine birch, and we can be the lucky recipients of the divine nutrition we’d otherwise be deprived of.  Also, chaga grows on a living tree, as opposed to a dead tree like most mushrooms.  In that light, chaga is a slow-growth fungus, meaning it take 15-20 years or more to reach maturity.  In those 15-20 years, chaga has artfully grown into all of its beneficial nutrients, as you want to make sure your chaga product is the sclerotium of the mushroom as opposed to the mycelium.  Though mycelium still does contain some of the nutrients, it has been scientifically proven that the sclerotium, or body, of chaga is more dense and fruitful.
Specifics!

Chaga, as already stated, is spawned from the birch, which is a revered “medicinal tree.”  The birch naturally harbors betulin and betulinic acid.  Chaga has taken a concentrated extract of betulin out of the birch and made it digestible for us.  Betulin is anti-mutagenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and immuno-modulating.  Anti-mutagenic means that chaga has been seen to actually help to not only to protect you from, but also inhibit, genetic mutations or diseases.

At an astounding 25% antioxidant makeup, it has one of, if not the highest anti-oxidant content, second to only chocolate.  Chaga exceeds other mushroom supplements in antioxidants by a remarkable 23%.

Chaga also contains one of the highest known concentrations of superoxide dismutase, or SOD.  SOD is a naturally occurring enzyme in our bodies that helps to protect us from free radicals and, ironically, the damaging effects of oxygen.  Though we need oxygen to live, one type of oxygen called singlet oxygen is one of the leading causes of aging and disease in the body.  SOD’s main function is to inhibit oxidation of this type and protect your body from toxicity.  SOD is naturally found in our skin and is responsible for skin-cell rebuilding, helping also to rejuvenate our skin and protect it from aging.  SOD also helps to carry nitrous oxide to hair follicles.  This particular enzyme is typically found in darker green vegetables, they however do not even come close to the 10,000 to 20,000 active SOD units per gram in chaga, nor is it as digestible in alternative forms.
