AKIRA Ikeda Gallery, Catalogue No. 124

April, 1980

Limited Edition: 1 of only 1000 Stated Copies

*VERY SCARCE*

We have not seen another copy of this catalogue on offer anywhere in the world! This extremely rare, vintage limited edition softcover catalogue with stiff wraps was published on the occasion of the above 1980 exhibition.

It opens with a full page black and white photographic portrait of the artist by Bill Jacobson, and is followed by five superb full page color reproductions.

The catalogue essay is in Japanese, and the Checklist of the five works exhibited, as well as the lengthy biographical summary are both in English.

This volume measures 8.75 by 10.5 inches and has 22 pages.  That last end page expressly states that it was printed in Japan in a limited run of only 1,000 copies; it is most uncommon thus.

This is an important limited edition Japanese vintage exhibition catalogue that is very difficult to find stateside. It was de-accessioned from the library of the New Museum in New York City. The first front end page, which is blank, bears the museum library's elegant ink stamp, as does the bottom margin of the page featuring a reproduction of the painting Untitled #10 (shown). Other than the museum's two discreet ink stamps, there are no checkout cards or other markings.

There is notable shelfwear to the cover, mostly consisting of scuffing, minor grubbiness and a two square inch area of tape residue where a price sticker was peeled off; it is otherwise in very good vintage condition.

A very useful vintage reference on the work of Agnes Martin with information on provenance, etc. that is not to be found elsewhere. It is thus particularly helpful to dealers, collectors and serious scholars of the artist's work, for fans and collectors of Minimalist art, and for those who enjoy finding and acquiring catalogues that nobody else you know will have.

Note that the header image is a reproduction from inside the catalogue and the actual cover itself is shown within this listing.
