Heat Mat Size

Before selecting your heating, it is vital to ensure you have the correct size heat mat to suit your room. The correct size is required as the wire CANNOT be reduced or extended.

  1. Work out the total area of the room
  2. Deduct the areas of all fixed furniture items such as kitchen units, bath, toilet e.t.c. (Any furniture item without min of 60mm free flowing air gap).
  3. Deduct a further 5% from this remaining area. This allows for the space around the edge of the room and variations due to the shape of the room.

It is always best to have a little less heating than some left over!

Fitting Instructions (Full detailed installation instructions are included with the product)

  1. Ensure the floor area is level, clean and free of dust & debris. Check for any protruding objects such as nail heads.
  2. Fit a suitable insulating laminate / wood underlay. Available at Laminate Heating Underlay
  3. Starting at the thermostat position, roll out the heat mat on top of the underlay.
  4. When an obstacle such as a wall is met, cut the foil of the mat, taking care not to cut the wire, and begin rolling in the new desired direction.
  5. Leaving a 6mm gap between the mats, stick 10cm strips of the 50mm aluminium tape (Included) between the mat sections.
  6. Cover all mat joints with the special 80mm aluminium tape (Included).
  7. Fit the floor sensor as per instructions.
  8. Carefully lay the laminate or wood flooring directly above the heating
  9. Connect the thermostat controller. (Thermostats must be fitted outside of a bathroom).
  10. Enjoy your heated floor.

Electrical Considerations

  • As with all electrical projects governed by Part P regulations, all mains electrical connections must be undertaken by a certified electrician.
  • The heating system must be protected by a 30mA RCD. This can be situated within the consumer unit or via a dedicated RCD fused spur.
  • We recommend a maximum area of 24m² to be controlled by one thermostat. Any area greater than this should be split into separate zones (different heat mats) and controlled by more than one thermostat.
  • Ensure the total current of your heating system does not exceed the current capacity of the circuit it is connected to. Normal ring circuits are rated at 13A and an electrical feed can be taken via a single 13A fused spur.

Insulation
 photo Heatuptimesgraph.jpg

We recommend the use of a good quality insulating underlay with a high tog value. If installing the heating onto a uninsulated concrete floor,
insulation boards can be installed under the underlay for maximum efficiency. Insulation boards reduce heat-up times and running costs by up to 50%. This means they can pay for themselves in just 2-3 years.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of flooring can be used with BodenWärme Foil underfloor heating?
Most good quality laminate and engineered wood floors are suitable. Always check the specific flooring manufacturers instructions.

Will BodenWärme floor heating warm the room as well as the floor?
Yes, if the room is adequately insulated & Marmox insulation boards are used it can be used as the only source of heating.

Can the heating cable be shortened or extended?
No! It is vital that the correct size heat mat is used. If you are unsure which size to purchase we can work this out for you. Simply draw out your floor plan with all measurements including all furniture items without legs of at least 60mm and a free flowing air gap underneath, and send these across to us at the business details below.

How much will it cost to run?
Several factors will affect this including insulation & other heat sources. An average cost is approximately 1.2p per square meter per hour.

How reliable is BodenWärme underfloor heating?
This dual core heating model has been on the UK market for over 8 years now & to date there has been NO cases of a product developing a fault due to a manufacturing defect after installation.

What type of underlay should I use?
The underlay must be specifically suitable for use with electric underfloor heating. The insulating properties of the underlay are important to reduce heat up times and increase efficiency. The higher the R value the better. Take care not to select an underlay designed for warm water underfloor heating systems. These are designed with low insulation values as with these systems the heat needs to pass through the underlay. If an insulation board is being used, an underlay must be installed on top as the hard surface of the insulation board will cause damage to the foil heating. The correct underlay can be purchased at https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Laminate-Wood-Underlay-Insulation-for-Electric-Underfloor-Heating-9-7m-/191601219371

Can I use this heating with other floor coverings such as tiles?
No, this type of underfloor heating is only suitable for use with laminate and wood flooring.

How quickly can I use the heating after I have laid the flooring?
The heating should be left off for 2 weeks after installation to allow the wood to acclimatise. It should then be turned on at a low temperature and increased by a few degrees a day.

Can I control more than 1 room with a single thermostat?
We recommend that each room should have a separate thermostat  fitted. This ensures accurate temperature control, provides energy savings and makes installation easier.

Should I use the air or floor temperature sensor on the thermostat?
It is VERY IMPORTANT that the FLOOR ONLY temperature sensor on the thermostat should be selected. This will prevent overheating and potential damage to the flooring.
