Expressionism was an artistic style that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially in Germany and Austria, where artists sought to depict not objective reality but rather the subjective emotions and responses that objects and events aroused in them. The Expressionists revolted against Impressionism, with its faithfulness to rendering nature as it appeared. Their goal was to depict the world as it felt viscerally rather than how it looked on the surface and, by doing so, to reinvigorate art with authenticity and expressive force.
Expressionist artists used distortion, exaggeration, primitivism, fantasy and vivid, jarring violent applications of the formal elements of their compositions. Extreme angles, flattened forms, garish colors, and distorted views are distinctive features of Expressionism, which flourished between 1905 and 1920.
