When
winter gives way to spring then something stirs at the very foundations
of the Swedish soul. Something that reaches back to our childhood and
perhaps beyond. These feelings connect us with those nineteenth-century
student choristers, who feeling them just as strongly sang "Längtan till
landet" (Yearning for the countryside) and many other songs which
remain forever associated with spring.
This cultivation of an
old but vigorous tradition reaches its climax every year here in
Stockholm on April 30th when the Stockholm Academic Male Chorus greets
spring in the Skansen open air museum. On this day, like on no other
occasion, the audience expects to hear these spring songs as their
composers originally intended: performed by a male chorus. It has
nothing to do with genders at the various academic institutions in the
Swedish capital or even - some might argue and others would vehemently
deny - with musical quality. It is purely tradition.
This CD
captures some of the most loved male chorus songs generally performed
during this season together with a few songs which hold a special place
in the repertoire of Stockholm Academic Male Chorus.
This record
is a HYBRID SACD, which is the format created by Sony and Philips. On
the same disc the SACD format gives the producer the option to include
up to three different music programs:
