About the Artwork

A chromolithograph after Ravi Varma depicting a young woman playing the sitar by a garden pool. Varma was a major figure in the history of Indian art, his work widely reproduced for popular consumption. He drew much of his inspiration from Indian literary tradition, including the Mahabharata and Ramayana, but painted according to the techniques of European academic art.
