How do I find the correct type of bulb for my vehicle?

The best way to ensure correct fitment is to take the time to check what bulbs are currently fitted to your vehicle, or consult your vehicles handbook. If access to the bulb covers is difficult however or in some cases impossible without taking the bumper off, we recommend using OSRAM's Online Automotive Bulb Tool.

NEW! Now find the correct lamps for car interior lighting!

To ensure correct fitment we recommend checking the bulb type that is currently installed and locating the bulb type number before ordering to ensure correct fitment.

H1 Fitment & Function

The H1 was the first halogen lamp approved for automotive use. It was introduced in 1962 by a group of European bulb and headlamp manufacturers. The bulb was not approved for use in the US until 1997.

The H1 lamp uses a P14.5s base in accord with IEC 60061. This is a round metal prefocus base 14.5mm in diameter with a flat and two dimples so the H1 can be installed in a lamp only in the correct, intended rotative position. There is one 6.35mm male spade terminal in the centre of the base, through which power is supplied. The H1 grounds through the metal base itself.

Base designation: P14.5s

H3 Fitment & Function

H3's are one of the older type of bulbs and are mostly found in foglights, cornering lights and spotlights. They're also popular in motorbikes for operating low or high beam.

H4 Fitment & Function

The H4 Bulb is a twin filament bulb, this means it operates high and low beam from one bulb. Only one H4 bulb will be fitted to each headlamp. It is the most popular bulb and was released in 1971, it quickly became the predominant headlamp bulb throughout the world.

H4 bulbs have a 3 pin base which fit directly into the bulb holder, the 3 pins are positioned on the base in such a way that the bulb can only be fitted in the correct anglular position and one way only, if there were no pins the bulb could be fitted upside-down, resulting in the beam pattern being entirely wrong, low beam would become high beam and point to the wrong side of the road vice-versa.

Base designation: P43t

H7 Fitment & Function Information

The H7 bulb is an automotive industry standard term, representing a headlight bulb standard that contains a single filament and a two pin base. It is the most popular bulb type.

Base designation: PX26d

H11 Fitment & Function Information

H11 bulbs can usually be found operating dipped beam, main beam and also the cars fog lights.

Base designation: PGJ19-2

HB3 Fitment & Function Information

The HB3 (a.k.a 9005) is mainly used to provide high or low beam in headlights.

'HB3' bulbs can be easily confused with 'HB4' bulbs as the power sockets are very similar, manufacturers tend to use these two type of bulbs together in a single headlight to provide high and low beam.

Base designation: P20d

HB4 Fitment & Function Information

The HB4 (a.k.a 9006) is mainly used in the headlight as a low beam bulb, it is also widely used as a fog light bulb.

'HB4' bulbs can be easily confused with 'HB3' (9005 bulbs) due to the sockets being similar. The difference between the two bulbs is the wattage and beam projection out of the bulb (due to the covered end cap).

Base designation: P22d

D1S Fitment & Function Information

The D1S is a High Intensity Discharge bulb that's used in many modern car headlights as a low beam bulb, if the car is fitted with bi-xenon headlights it will operate both low and high beam.

The D stands for discharge, and the number is the type designator. The final letter describes the outer shield. The arc within an HID headlamp bulb generates considerable short-wave ultraviolet (UV) light, but none of it escapes the bulb, for a UV-absorbing hard glass shield is incorporated around the bulb's arc tube. This is important to prevent degradation of UV-sensitive components and materials in headlamps, such as polycarbonate lenses and reflector hardcoats. "S" burners – D1S, D2S, D3S, and D4S – have a plain glass shield and are primarily used in projector-type optics. "R" burners – D1R, D2R, D3R, and D4R – are designed for use in reflector-type headlamp optics. They have an opaque mask covering specific portions of the shield, which facilitates the optical creation of the light/dark boundary (cutoff) near the top of a low-beam light distribution. Automotive HID burners do emit considerable near-UV light, despite the shield.
