This is an authentic, vintage (NOT a modern reprint) circa 1939 full color photogravure print from the Schmolcke Photographic Studio in Magdeburg, Germany. It is a rare full color nude study from the time period, uncommon not only for it's full color photogravure process, but also because the pubic hair of the model is not blended out as were many of the images from 1930's Germany due to censorship pressure. The "liberation" of this piece from censorship was due to the naturist, fitness lifestyle the composition/subject suggests - which was approved of by the Nazi government. In the late 1930's the Nazi regime both encouraged and promoted the idea of outdoor health, fitness and vitality along with the unashamed display of the naked body. Nudist associations flourished in 1930's Germany and the government looked upon the unadorned beautiful, healthy, fit female body as representing fertility and the womanly ideal of the Aryan race. The Schmolcke Studio in Magdeburg along with some other German photographic studios (see our other store listings - use search term "color") received approval from the German government in producing these outdoor nude studies of the "homeland" female.
This vintage full color photogravure comes attached to its original protective backing paper (adhered along the top edge of print - please see second scan) as it was issued originally in circa 1939. Full color photogravures from this time period are uncommon, the labor intensive crafting of a color photogravure and the ensuing expense usually prohibited usage of the process. A natural outdoor nude study which essentially celebrates the pre-war German ideal of the Aryan woman, this early color piece has historical significance on several levels. Whether you collect photogravure prints, vintage photography, or are simply looking for extraordinary home or business decor, this engaging photogravure print will mat, frame and display beautifully!
Note:
color photogravures are difficult to scan accurately - our scan above
does not do justice to the actual print which is much smoother with
fine color graduations which our scanners simply cannot convey.
This vintage color photogravure print is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY (COA) with unique individual registered serial number from the Finephoto Vintage Archive & Database. Under
magnification this plate shows a tight "honeycomb", uniform pressing of ink and a wide range of tone - all indicative of a
quality sheet fed gravure print. The watermark word "Finephoto" does not appear on the actual print.

we maintain in two separate West Florida archive locations. To

if you decide to use the Best Offer option in those listings which
contain one and make us a reasonable offer, we will do our best to
accept.ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure
is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper
plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by
pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which
has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the
actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate
combined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink to
be transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to
the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true
continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional
silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching,
engraving or lithograph.
Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately
rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic
print making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected
(when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and
portfolio projects, but due to it's significant expense and labor, the
process is rarely seen today. From
Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the
world's most renown photographic masters have published their images in
the rich photogravure process. OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU: We don't just want to meet your expectations, we want to exceed them with each and every purchase! We
