GENERAL DESCRIPTION

ALREADY POTTED IN 1 LITRE ROUND POTS AND NOW DYING OFF OR THE WINTER. THE PICTURE IS A STOCK PICTURE AND SHOWS HOW THE PLANT WILL LOOK WHEN FULLY MATURE BUT IT IS A SUGARY-PINK AND NOT A BRIGHT PINK. EACH PLANT MAKES A LOVELY DISPLAY AND CAN BE EITHER LEFT IN POTS OR TAKEN OUT AND USED TO ADD COLOUR TO LARGER CONTAINERS, OR BORDERS.

QUITE DISTINCTIVE FROM THE FORMS OF ASTRANTIA MAJOR COMES THIS WONDERFUL SPECIES “ASTRANTIA MAXIMA ROSEA”. THE LARGE TRIANGULAR BRACTS ARE HELD PRETTY MUCH FLAT AND ARE A RICH SUGARY-PINK. THE TRUE FLOWERS FROM A LARGE DENSE PIN-CUSHION CENTRE. THE LEAVES ARE FRESHER GREEN THAN MOST AND SPLIT INTO THREE LOBES. DIFFERENT IN HAVING A SPREADING HABIT. HAPPY IN SUN OR PART SHADE WITH SOME DRAINAGE. THE FLOWERS ARE PRODUCED OVER A VERY EXTENDED SEASON FROM SPRING INTO SUMMER AND DRY VERY WELL.

“ASTRANTIA MAXIMA ROSEA” HAS RECEIVED THE ROYAL HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY’S AWARD OF GARDEN MERIT (AGM) WHICH IS FOR PLANTS OF OUTSTANDING EXCELLENCE.

THIS IS A COTTAGE GARDEN FAVOURITE AND MAKES A GREAT CHOICE FOR PLANTING AT A WOODLAND EDGE IN DAPPLED SHAPE, GROWING UNDER THE CANOPIES OF TREES OR PLANTING EN MASSE IN THE MOIST GROUND AROUND NATURAL PONDS AND STREAMS. THEY WILL TOLERATE DRIER SOILS AS LONG AS THE PLANTS ARE MULCHED.

AS ASTRANTIA DETER SLUGS, THEY CAN ALSO BE COMBINED WITH LARGE-LEAVED PLANTS SUCH AS HOSTAS TO ACT AS AN ORGANIC METHOD OF CONTROLLING SLUG DAMAGE. A GREAT CHOICE FOR CONTEMPORARY-STYLE PLANTINGS. ATTRACTIVE TO BEES AND BUTTERFLIES

AFTER FLOWERING “ASTRANTIA MAXIMA ROSEA” CAN BE REJUVENATED BY CUTTING THEM BACK CLOSE TO THE GROUND, FRESH NEW FOLIAGE AND A LATE CROP OF FLOWERS START APPEARING SHORTLY AFTER. PLANTS DO NOT SPREAD FAR, BUT ARE WELL-KNOWN FOR SELF SEEDING

Legal Disclaimer

All plants are sent in 1 litre pots and are therefore need to be grown in the ground for some time before they establish and are mature enough to flower. Plants always do better in the ground than in pots. All have good root systems ready to be planted out unless otherwise stated. Bulbs and some plants may be dormant or dying back depending on time of receipt. Bulbs and corm numbers may vary in pots but usually it is only ONE BULB per pot. Some plants need to be cut back to send out but should re-flower once planted out therefore they are NOT ALWAYS SUITABLE AS GIFTS. We are offering a wide selection of plants for gardeners. From September to March many plants may have been previously split and re-potted so please be aware of this when ordering or receiving them and DO NOT order unless you are happy with this. The picture gives the final flowering plant and is not always what you will receive as it depends on the time of year. Although we take great care packing, sometimes a leaf or flower may be broken in transit but this will not affect the plant and is not an issue for replacement or refund. Sometimes plants just do not like the conditions of a particular garden especially the soil and may not thrive. Never over-water. Stock can die, be eaten by voles or quickly develop disease. Some Plants don't like certain soils. We use environmentally friendly paper shredding’s and cardboard for packaging, Postal sources are sometimes a bit rough with their handling but it does not usually affect the contents. Any problems please email us and send a picture on receipt immediately.
