I'm baffled at this...so don't expect any hard answers. This came from a man who collected German war relics and was German himself. He served in the Korean War as he was American. I'm aware of his family going back to Germany for two visits...in the 1960s and the 1980s.

I believe this is the German version of a Nickel-Iron (or Cadmium) battery cover...possibly based on Edison's. This type of battery had various uses including mining...and a 50 volt nickel–iron battery was the main D.C. power supply in the World War II German V-2 rocket, together with two 16 volt batteries which powered the four gyroscopes (turbine powered generators supplied A.C. for its magnetic amplifier driven servomechanisms). A smaller version was used in the V-1 flying bomb.

So - this could have had a very basic use or possibly a greater role. Whatever it was - this is all that remains - and it has been saved as a relic with a sawtooth hanger on the back for display.
