This ENI CDV-700, model 6B Geiger Counter is a genuine piece of Cold War memorabilia, and it really works. It’s an American Classic as seen in countless movies and TV shows over the years. Make no mistake, this is a proper Geiger Counter, the genuine article, fully operational, completely original and sensitive enough to detect normal background radiation, with several clicks a minute (depending on your local environment and where you live).

It’s the perfect gift for Doomsday Preppers and urban prospectors. As you can see in the photo it gets quite excited by luminous radium-painted hands and dials found in old clocks and watches (pre 1950s) -- see photo, that's half scale on the meter, on the x10 intermediate range! It can even detect trace amounts of natural uranium in ores like certain types of granite – some kerb stones really get it clicking -- thorium doped welding rods and old gas mantles, antique glass and ceramics with uranium glaze and so on. A rotating shield on the removable probe/handle is used to discriminate between Beta and Gamma radiation.

CDV 700s were made during the 1960s, for the US Civil Defence corps and no expense was spared. 700s made by ENI are reckoned to be amongst the most reliable and this one has been very well looked after.  For most of its life it would have been stored in a bunker or shelter in preparation for nuclear war. The chrome parts are shiny and free of corrosion and the metalwork is rust free, in fact it is in superb condition -- just a few minor paint chips here and there, from years of being removed from storage for testing and calibration -- not bad for something that’s more than 50 years old. It runs on four standard 1.5-volt D (torch) cells and these can last weeks, or months, depending on use.

It also comes with one of anythingradioactive's modern clicker and LED flasher modules that attaches to the side with hoop and loop tape. You will also get a custom 3.5mm jack adaptor so it can be used with modern headphones – a pair is included -- and there is an original operation and service manual, also in excellent condition.

Due to its age there are no returns, or guarantees except that it works. It hasn’t been calibrated for some time, but it has been checked against a modern instrument and it’s not far off the mark. Even so, it shouldn’t be relied upon for serious scientific measurements or health and safety applications. Please note that due to US & UK regulations the radioactive check source label has been removed but it has been fitted with an authentic looking but inert modern repro label.
