BRASS SHIP’S LAMP - DAVEY & CO., LONDON
In original and used condition, this ship’s lamp is in exceptional condition, exhibiting only the patina of age and signs of long usage. There is no damage that I can see - excepting, perhaps, a slight bending of the catch that secures the top section to the main carcase - nor are there signs of any restoration. The four glass sides are intact and appear original, the glass funnel is also intact and appears original, there is a wick in the burner which has obviously been used in the past and there are signs that there has been paraffin in the burner reservoir. The wick moves up and down easily and although I have not tested the lamp, I can’t see any reason why it would not still work
The lamp is 15” tall (excluding the handle), 6” wide (excluding the handle and the fixings on the sides), and it bears the name DAVEY & CO LONDON LTD, LONDON, ENGLAND on the front edge of the base.
I have to say that, having sailed myself and having had many items of nauticalia pass through my hands, this is the first lamp I have seen in such good condition even after it has clearly given many years of service.
I don’t know its age but I would say it is late nineteenth century.
It would make a splendid addition to a classic sailboat’s interior and would also be highly desirable, I suspect, to a collector of genuine, original maritime objects.
