Grow Your Own Mushrooms:

King Stropharia also known are also known as wine cap (due to their burgundy colour when they first emerge) and Garden Giant - because they can literally grow enormous, if left to their own devices in a good location - in fact they can grow up to 3feet in diameter (around 1metre)!! But they need to be harvested long before they reach this size. These mushrooms have a similar taste to shop mushrooms, but it is much stronger, and more pleasant. This mushroom is to most people's liking.

This mushroom can be grown indoors, but it tends to be quite difficult to fruit as it requires symbiosis with rich soil bacteria to trigger fruiting (this is how I managed to fruit it in a bag in one of the pictures above - but it is generally considered to be very difficult to grow mushrooms in this way). It is far easier to grow this mushroom outside, and if you seed the mushroom into straw used around the base of other plants (eg around the base of my tomatoes, in some of these pictures), you can pretty much leave it to Mother Nature to do all the hard work for you. The only thing is you must remember to check regularly, or you may find you miss the mushrooms when they do appear (usually 2-6months after starting).

This is definitely one of my favourite mushrooms - with it's deep meaty taste, large size and lovely burgundy-coloured gills, even on mature mushrooms.
