HAWAII, Kingdom scarce 1883 silver $1/4 Hapaha Quarter 25 Cents; toned VF

Rare Kingdom of Hawaii 1883 silver Quarter Dollar; minted for the Kingdom in the U.S. at the San Francisco mint, short-lived 1-year type. After Hawaii became a US territory in 1900, the entire 1883 coinage was withdrawn from the circulation and over half of the original issue was redeemed and melted down. According to the official US mint records, from the original mintage of just 499,974 Quarters over 257,400 were redeemed and melted down. Nova days this type is rare in better grades as many surviving coins were made into pendants, medals and jewelry. The coin weights about 6.25 gm, about 24.4 mm in diameter, .900 silver content, reeded edge. No typical rim nicks or dings; nice original light-gray patina throughout; these are the actual photos.
