Inscribed on the reverse of the front free endpaper "For Michael with love from Aunt Muriel (Meredith) Martel (?). I have marked the pages that concern your Grandfather Brig General J B Meredith DSO". (There are some corresponding red pen marks highlighting text in the book where (the then) Lt Col Meredith is mentioned).
Enclosed in the book is a 4 page letter from Muriel Meredith to 'Michael'. Muriel was one of two daughters Brig General Meredith had with his first wife Harriett Eveline Waters. In the letter she refers to:
- Her father's enlistment in August 1914
- 'String pulling' behind the appointment of George (Macarthur) Onslow and later H V Vernon as Commander of the 1st Light Horse Regiment
- 'Fighting' Charlie Cox - who she claims was called 'Frightened Charlie' on Gallipoli
- The Battle of Romani and Meredith being awarded the DSO
- Suggestions of a knighthood
- Meredith's appointment as commander of a new Brigade made up of the 4th, 11th and 12th Light Horse Regiments
- Meredith's visit to Kildare in Ireland in 1908 when attached to the 18th Hussar Regiment
The letter which is signed 'Aunt Muriel' was written in late 1963.
