This is an extraordinary oil painting by the British painter William Fitz. We are antique and fine art dealers for over 50 years. We and various experts we have shown this work to feel this painting is the best Fitz ever painted. It was completed in 1874 and is signed Fitz 74 on the lower left front of the painting. It depicts a Monk of the Trinitarian Order in deep prayer. The expression and detail on the Monk's face is mesmerizing as is the strength shown in the monk's hands.  The Trinitarian Order, a Catholic Order, was founded on December 17th, 1198 by St. John of Matha. The Monks are the Order of the Holy Trinity and Captives. Pope Innocent III approved the order and Louis IX established a house of their order in his chateau at Fontainbleau. They were instrumental in praying for captives and raising money to free them.

" The Trinitarians remain committed to works of mercy and redemption around the world..Whether we are serving in parish ministry, schools, prisons, or the missions, we strive to imitate the unity and love of the Most Holy Trinity. "  The Trinitarians

The painting is  38.5 inches high X 29.25 inches wide. With the frame it measures 40 inches wide by 50 inches high. This frame, 19th Century, original to the painting, is similar to two frames I inquired about at JULIUS LOWY FRAMES IN NYC. Julius Lowy is the finest antique frame seller and restorer in the United States.  The frames were priced at  22.000 TO 35,000, both 19th century and similar in design. THE TRINITARIAN MONK REPRESENTS AN EXCELLENT PURCHASE, VALUE AND INVESTMENT.
