La Miniature, Miniature Portrait painting, French book
La Miniature, Miniature Portrait painting, French book
"En contemplant mes traits, ne songez qu'à mon coeur" - "Contemplating my features, only think of my heart" Jacqueline du Pasquier.
This hardcover book with 256 color pages and great illustrations presents the miniatures
portrait painting, on vellum, ivory and paper, from the beginning of the 16th century, when it first
appeared in England, until the last years of the 19th century which saw its gradual extinction.
Mounted as a jewel, present on or inside a box or in a box to escape the prying eyes,
accompanied by the hair of the loved one, it was ardently loved, as evidenced by literature and painting.
It was also a diplomatic gift between sovereigns, even if its connotation remains sentimental.
Painted on ivory from the second half of the 18h century, it knows a craze that affects
all classes of society and that the Revolution and the Napoleonic wars will only amplify.
His various roles are described, accompanied by an evocation of the most talented
and original artists who have practiced this art, in England, France and throughout Europe
where the miniature reigns until the mid-19th century.
Between the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, its golden age,
it is relayed by the physionotrace, engraving portrait in small, then by the miniature
on hard porcelain which develops and perfected during the first half of the 19th century.
Abundantly illustrated, this book has the merit, which should also interest specialists,
to discover unknown works of high quality from private collections and unveil some masterpieces,
until now not yet published.
