What is a Jessner’s Peel?

The Jessner’s Peel Treatment was formerly known as the Coombe's formula. It was pioneered by Dr Max Jessner, a German-American dermatologist. Dr Jessner combined lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol in an ethanol base. This was then applied to the skin to treat many different skin conditions.

We sell our Jessner Peels in 3 different strengths. After listening to our customers, we decided to create 3 different strengths, safe for home use, as many customers found the full strength Jessner Peels too strong for first time use. This way, we can appeal to all skin types and, home peelers can gradually build up the strength to suit their needs, and reduce the risk of irritation.

Lactic Acid is said to be less harsh and more moisturizing than Glycolic Acid skin peels. Lactic is one of the Alpha Hydroxy acids (AHA fruit acids). Fruit acids are nontoxic, naturally occurring substances, and are found in a variety of fruits, such as grapes, apples and sugar cane. Other fruit acids are Citric, Malic, Glycolic and Pyruvic Acids. Lactic acid is a mild AHA acid that is often derived from milk so people with an intolerance to milk or dairy products should not use this acid

Salicylic Acid is a Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA) it is a fat-soluble acid, and when used as a topical agent as is the case when used as a peel or cream, breaks down lipids (oils and fats) in the upper layers of the skin. Salicylic Acid is derived from willow bark and can be found in many beauty products such as shampoo and creams.

Resorcinol is an effective exfoliating agent that loosens the damaged skin layers and exposes new skin cells, once the sloughing of dead skin cells is complete.

What is it used for?

Lactic Acid is most commonly used for the removal of sunspots, hyper-pigmentation, liver spots and other skin discolorations and is suitable for all skin types.  A Lactic Acid peel is also recommended for the reduction of Rosacea as it is the mildest of peels. Lactic Acid is a thorough exfoliator, removing the outer layers of thickened or damaged skin, leaving a smoother and healthier appearance. With prolonged use, Lactic Acid has been found to be beneficial in improving dry skin, treating age spots, improving oily and acne prone skin, and decreasing fine lines and wrinkles. Lactic acid works on the epidermis, the upper layer of the skin. The normal shedding of the layer becomes regular. When applied to the skin, the acid lifts and removes dead cells, it dissolves the glue-like substance that holds these dead skin cells and debris to the skin to reveal skin underneath that is smoother, fresher, and healthier looking. Eventually, this layer becomes more uniform after a peel resulting in a smoother feel, look, and texture of the skin. As it works into the deeper layers of the epidermis, the appearance of the skin is improved. Increased blood flow through the skin produces a smooth, clear, younger looking appearance.

Salicylic Acid when used as a topical agent as is the case when used as a peel or cream, breaks down lipids (oils and fats) in the upper layers of the skin. As Salicylic Acid is soluble in fat it has a deep cleansing effect on the pores, which makes it a great treatment for blackheads. It has been used to treat a variety of skin complaints, including: psoriasis, rosacea, keratosis pilaris and calluses. It is mostly used to treat skin that is prone to acne blocked pores or breakouts as it sloughs away the dead surface skin, preventing the pores from clogging up, which would lead to congested skin. It is also effective at treating seborrheic dermatitis.

The combined ingredients, along with Resorcinol, can work on different levels of the epidermis, resulting in a great exfoliating and cleansing action.

It is advised to start with the 10% strength, then gradually build up the strength after using the layering method.

As Jessner's Skin Peel is a light to medium peel, it tends to be suitable for all skin types. The peel has been known to be effective against the following skin conditions:

Application:

Once a previous successful patch test has been performed a few days prior, the skin needs to be thoroughly cleansed with an oil free cleanser, you can apply the Jessner’s Peel with one of our applicator brushes, or with a cotton pad. You may experience slight stinging or tingling while the acid is on the skin. Once activation time has passed you can apply a neutraliser. If you have not purchased one of our neutralisers you can make one by mixing a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in water and applying it to the face.

Post Peel:

The skin may turn pink but will return to its normal colour within 1 to 2 days. When used correctly there shouldn't be any redness, burning, or blistering. If you experience these symptoms seek medical treatment and discontinue use. This will happen when the product is not used correctly, you are allergic to any of the ingredients, or if your skin is too sensitive to handle a chemical peel. It is normal for the skin to “peel” and appear flaky 1 to 2 days after use. That means the product is working. This is the dead skin shedding, allowing a healthy layer to come to the surface. Not all people experience peeling, or flaking, but if heavy peeling or slight scabbing occurs, apply a petroleum-based product, or antiseptic ointment to help speed healing.

If you are using this product to control acne, remember that your acne will appear worse before it looks better. The reason is that as the dead skin layers are peeled from the face, the acne will be brought to the surface. This is actually accelerating the healing process. In this case, don’t be discouraged and continue recommended use to see improvement.

How often?

It is recommended that you use the Jessner’s Peel solution once weekly for 6 weeks, then, rest your skin for 2 weeks (to allow skin cells to naturally rejuvenate). After the 2 week rest, you may start another 6 week cycle.  Continue this cycle until you achieve desired results. Certain scars or deep wrinkles may require several cycles of treatment. This product contains alpha-hydroxy acid which may increase skin sensitivity to the sun and increase the likelihood of sun damage or sunburn. Be certain to use sunscreen protection of at least spf 25 while using this product and after you discontinue use.

Do not use if:

Under 16

Have cracked or sore skin

Have eczema or psoriasis

Recently had microdermabrasion

Peppermint Fizz Neutralising Gel

Our  'Peppermint Fizz' neutraliser is designed to help balance your skin’s pH level (level of acidity and alkalinity) after a chemical peel, and move it back toward a healthy pH level of around 5.5.  Keeping Your Skin Safe.

Post chemical peel, the neutralising phase is essential to make the acid safe, and to minimize the possibility of the acid continuing to work on your skin for longer than the optimal safe period.

Anyone who has used a chemical AHA peel will know that your skin does tend to tingle uncomfortably during the process, and can then become red and irritated. So thorough neutralisation of your peel is essential and will ensure your chemical peel results are optimal.

Most ‘superficial’ peel users tend to neutralise their peels with plenty of water, and some also use a mixture of baking soda and water. However, more and more users are now using this type of pH balancing gel in their neutralizing or aftercare routine.

By balancing the pH level of your skin, our neutraliser calms your skin down after the chemical peel process. Other benefits include:

. Stops the burn after the peel process

. Soothing peppermint for cool relief

. Stops the action of the acid upon application

. Reduces post peel redness

To use:

Apply to the skin once the chemical peel activation time period is reached. Leave the neutraliser on for 1 to 2 minutes, or until the fizzing stops. Then wash off with water. Gently pat the skin dry, then add an oil free moisturiser or serum.
