About 35 years ago we were at an auction that had a small lot of these early hand made bird snares.  Unfortunately we did not bid on them and often times wish we had due to the uniqueness of what they are.  As good fortune would have it, we just recently met the lady whose father had consigned those traps to that auction many years ago.  She had very few left and we were able to purchase these from her.  The story she told us was that these were Maine Indian made.  Her father had purchased a number of them, consigned some to auction and kept a few for himself.  As shown these are not in great shape and we felt fortunate to be able to acquire an example of these hard to find, seldom seen,  snares in any condition.
These are made with a wood hoop about 17-20" in diameter, then strung with twine making squares about 2" x 2".  At the intersecting corners of the squares is tied a piece of horsehair with a loop at the end forming a "snare".  Seed was sprinkled on the ground as bait and the snare was placed over the area of seed.  This would catch birds or other small prey feeding on the seed.  As shown in the photos one of these is in very, very poor condition and is offered for parts only.  The other one, although missing some of the twine and horsehair loops is in good enough condition to provide you with an example of how this hard to find item was constructed.
