John Denny African American Indian Wars Congressional Medal of Honor Winner

Here we have a photo of Buffalo Soldier, John Denny. Born in Big Flats, New York, Mays joined the Army and had attained the rank of Sergeant in the Cavalry. In 1879, his unit particpated in an engagement at Las Animas Canyon, New Mexico. Sergeant Denny passed away on November 26, 1901 in his mid-fifties. His Medal Of Honor citation read:

Rank and organization: Sergeant, Company C, 9th U.S. Cavalry
Place and date: At Las Animas Canyon, N. Mex., 18 September 1879
Entered service at: 1867 Elmira, N.Y.
Date of issue: 27 November 1891

Citation: Removed a wounded comrade, under a heavy fire, to a place of safety.
