This is an authentic (NOT a modern reprint) vintage 1925 Modernist
Art Deco photogravure by the internationally renown Czech photographer
and artist Frantisek Drtikol. A pioneering and leading edge artist in
the 1920's, Drtikol was best known for his remarkable
photographic studies of the nude female form and his modernist art deco
style. He was a hugely talented artist with an unusual life story (he
abruptly gave up photography in 1935 at the height of his career,
drifted into obscurity and largely lived a hermit's life until his
death). Much of Drtikol's photographic work did not survive over the
years and his work in any form (silver gelatin or photogravure) is
considered rare. One of the most influential and important artists in
photographic history, Frantisek Drtikol's iconic images are
sought after by collectors and held in important art collections and
museums throughout the world.
Finephoto
is pleased to offer this rare collection of outstanding nude studies
which were carefully selected and assembled in 1924/25 by Dr. Peter
Landow in Berlin, Germany. With a search spanning from Europe and
Africa to distant South Pacific Islands, Landow sought the finest in
nude photography from the world's greatest photographers. In 1925 after
a lengthy selection process, the resulting 120 images were printed in
the finest quality sepia toned gravure to the highest archival standards.
The paper is of superb quality and the prints themselves are simply
beautiful to behold. This vintage collection contained what many would
consider to be the finest examples of artistic nude photography of the
early 20th century, from some of the most talented artists of the era.
This
photogravure is guaranteed to be authentic and comes with a hand signed

ABOUT PHOTOGRAVURE: Photogravure
is an intaglio print making process utilizing a carefully etched copper
plate made from the original negative/image. Prints are made by
pressing suitable paper heavily down upon the inked copper plate which
has been intricately etched to varying depths corresponding with the
actual tonality of the original negative, This precisely etched plate
combined with a fine "honeycomb" screen controls the amount of ink to
be transferred to the paper at any given point in direct proportion to
the variation of tone in the original image. The result is a true
continuous tone print which combines many qualities of a traditional
silver based photograph with a tactile feel similar to an etching,
engraving or lithograph.
Rich in tonal detail, the photogravure process produces delicately
rendered shades for a look which is unique in the world of photographic
print making. In the early to mid 1900's photogravure was selected
(when budgets allowed) for special high quality publishing and
portfolio projects, but due to its significant expense and labor, the
process is rarely seen today. From
Man Ray and Ruth Bernhard to Brett Weston and Ansel Adams, many of the
world's most renown photographic masters have published their images in
the rich photogravure process.
