Hull Maintenance Tech 3 & 2 (1972)
Out-of-print, softcover book with 674 pages, from the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Navy training Courses, Navpers, Washington, D.C.
The
book is in GOOD condition!! The book has moderate wear from use
and has no dust jacket. There are no locations of writing of the text that I could find from a cursory
review. It's still a good book with plenty of life left in
it!!
Asbestos References:
There are numerous asbestos references throughout this book. Some of these references include the following:
Chapter 6: Decks and Deck Coverings
“Marbleized fire retardant vinyl asbestos tile of 0.08 inch thickness is the standard resilient deck tile approved for steel surface ships. Vinyl asbestos tile is stocked in eight marbleized colors.” This section then goes on to discuss the installation procedures & care of the tile.
Chapter 16: Pipefitting Materials
Listed in the chapter are statements regarding types of packing that are to be used: asbestos rod, high pressure, braided, wire
inserted, semi-metallic asbestos jacket or metallic flexible. Gasket materials that are to be used: asbestos
sheet, compressed asbestos, asbestos metallic cloth, sheet gaskets,
metallic-asbestos, spiral-wound gaskets.
“Magnesia-Asbestos Pipe Covering is most
commonly used as insulation on high temperature piping." Magnesia Asbestos pipe covering comes in three grades (I, II & III) up to 500ºF, 750ºF & 1050ºF respectively.
“Molded sheets, pads, blankets or tapes of long asbestos fibers are suitable for
temperatures above 850ºF.” “The pads or
blankets are used for insulating flanges or valves as well as for turbine
casings.”
Insulating Cements - Asbestos cements are “valuable
for patchwork emergency repairs, and for covering small irregular surfaces (valves,
flanges, joints, etc.)”. Asbestos cement
can also be used "for a surface finish over block or sheet forms of
insulation, to seal joints between the blocks, and to provide a smooth finish
over which asbestos or glass cloth lagging may be applied"
Chapter 17: Piping Systems
Bulkhead
Flange diagram – a compressed asbestos fibre
gaskets is shown.
Corrugated-type
bulkhead expansion joint diagram - Asbestos
cloth gasket is shown between pipe clamp and piping.
“Gasket
materials used in flanged joints are divided into two general categories
according to material: (1) Soft materials, such as sheet rubber, and sheet asbestos over 1/8 inch thick and
(2) hard materials, such as spiral-wound-metallic
asbestos, and sheet asbestos
less than 1/8 inch thick.”
Chapter 18: Piping System Repairs
Severed
Pipe Patch – “Where the gap exceeds 4 inches, thin sheet metal, 1/16” asbestos,
or other suitable material may be used as a substitute for the void cover in
bridging the gap.“
Installation
and Repair of Insulation – Asbestos is mentioned several times in the step by
step written procedures and is shown in the accompanying diagram as cement, cloth
and jackets.
Chapter
23: Fighting the fire
Flame
Safety Lamp Diagram – shows an upper asbestos
gasket.
Proximity Fire Fighting Suit – “The material
used in the coverall, gloves, and hood is asbestos cotton, aluminized on the
outside…”
