Particulate Clouds: Dusts, Smokes & Mists (1957)
Asbestos References:
This book covers the study of particulate clouds; how they are produced, their physical properties, how to protect against them, etc. Asbestos is mentioned in several places throughout the book as it relates to the various aspects of the studies.
From the Chapter on Health Hazards:
"Development of efficient dust respirators in Great Britain has centred round the wool-asbestos and wool-resin filters.”
There is information about filters that contain asbestos, including wool-asbestos, asbestos-bearing paper, and cotton-asbestos. There is a diagram of the Mark IV dust respirator, which ironically shows it consists of a molded rubber facepiece and two wool-asbestos filters. A respirator meant to protect against dust but is made from a hazardous material.
There is a brief paragraph on pneumoconiosis, which mentions
silica dust, asbestos, or other dusts as
they relate to diseases of the lung. “…asbestosis
caused by breathing asbestos dust…”
A picture of the glove box filter for removing radioactive airborne
contamination lists a wool-asbestos layer.
