Out-of-print, softcover book with nearly 500 pages, from the Bureau of Naval Personnel, Navy Training Courses, Navpers, Washington, D.C.

Asbestos References:

Asbestos is listed in this section as a material for packing and gaskets.  The second digit indicates the material of which the gasket or packing is primarily composed ? asbestos (1), vegetable fiber (2), rubber (3), metal (4), etc.

Insulation and Lagging:

Insulating materials commonly used in the Navy include magnesia, calcium silicate, diatomaceous silica, asbestos felt, mineral wool, fibrous cork and high temperature insulating cement.

Repairing Flanged Joints:

?Bolted joints in superheated steam piping are made up with symbol 2410 metallic-asbestos spiral-wound gaskets??  ?When symbol 2410 gaskets are used, each bolt stud must be pulled up to a specified tension.? ?Metallic-asbestos spiral-wound gaskets are designed to provide a tight joint  when they are compressed??

Repairing Insulation:

?When you replace insulation after making repairs to a piping system, use the same  kind of insulation that was used in the original installation.?  Thereby perpetuating the use of asbestos piping insulation and potential exposure to hazardous asbestos.

Reassembling Globe Valves:

??.always use symbol 2410 gaskets even if the valve was originally fitted with a symbol 2470 gasket?..?  Gasket symbol 2410 = metallic-asbestos spiral-wound gasket.

At the end of the Valves, Pipes and Fittings chapter there is a Safety Precautions section that has no mention of the harmful effects of asbestos or exposure to asbestos fibers.

Book Condition:

The book is in GOOD condition!!  The book has moderate wear from use.  There are no locations of highlighting of the text that I could find from a cursory review.  It's a used book with plenty of life left in it!!
