Fine, original, copper-engraved map of the Rhine River Valley from Strasbourg to Worms, covering portions of Alsace and Rhineland Palatinate, by Guillaume de l'Isle: Le Cours du Rhin depuis Strasbourg, jusqu'a Worms et le pays adjacens. Par Guill. Del'Isle, Geogr. de l'Academie Royale des Sciences. A Paris, chez l'Auteur sur le Quai de l'H'rloge a la Couro' de Diama's avec Priv. Early imprint; probably 1707. Original outline color. Overall dimensions: 19 3/4" x 26 7/8". Urban areas in color, shows forests, etc., relief shown pictorially. De L'Isle is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. Lloyd Brown states that De L'Isle "undertook a complete reform of a system of geography that had been in force since the second century, and by the time he was twenty five he had very nearly accomplished his purpose." Good heavy paper, dark impression, clean edges, minor slit along center-fold at bottom, otherwise excellent condition.
