In 1908 Marquis Mills Converse opened the Converse Rubber Company in Malden, Massachusetts providing winterized rubber soled footwear for men, women and children. In 1917 the catalyst for the company was the introduction of the Converse All-Star basketball shoe. In 1921 a basketball player by the name of Charles H. 'Chuck' Taylor walked in and was hired and the rest, so they say, is history. The shoe dominated the court and later crossed over to fashion and has become a wardrobe staple ever since.
