This is the traditional Nablus soap block that has been made in Nablus, Palestine for centuries using pure, first-pressed olive oil. The same recipe and process is still being used today and there remain only 3 soap manufacturers in Nablus.

Nablus soap is a pure soap manufactured with virgin olive oil from the olive groves of Nablus in the West Bank. The soap is made by hand using a small number of natural ingredients, with a mixture of first-pressed olive oil and salt as the basis.

This traditional soap making method is a delicate process in order to preserve the special properties of the olive oil. The soap mixture is heated for days over a low flame and then spread out onto a specially designed surface. It is dried and then a wool thread soaked in red vegetable pigment is then used to draw lines through the hardened soap, along which the soap is hand cut. The traces of red left behind by this process are an integral part of the soap and a proud symbol of hand manufacture.

The 3 ingredients are:  Olea Europea (olive oil), Sodium Hydroxide and Sodium Chloride (and water).

The soap is stamped by the soap makers and then piled high in geometric towers where it sets for several months before it is ready to use.
