John Stanley Antique Tools is pleased to offer this original antique Maine dug relic from our own collection.  This hand forged snowball or snow knocking hammer was unearthed long ago on an early farmstead in Chester, Maine.  Having been buried for many decades this has an almost artistic look that only Mother Nature working hand in hand with Father Time can create.  Many very deep pits and a great appearance.  This is an item that should be in every early logging collection.  This neat little hammer would have hung from the horses harness by the snap hook in the forged over end of the hammer handle.  These snow knocking hammers were used to knock the ice ball out of the horse shoe before starting up a slick hill or walking in on the barn floor so the horse has traction.  Old and blacksmith made.  The hammer measures 7 7/8" long with a 4 3/8" long head.  Over all length including the snap hook is 10 5/8".   No two snowball hammers are exactly alike.  If you have followed our auctions in the past, you know that we handle a lot of vintage hand forged items.  We scour barns and outbuildings in Maine looking for little gems such as this one.
