Esta subasta es por una (1) medalla que conmemora la vida y contribuciones de Arturo Alfonso Schomburg a la comunidad Afro Americana Niuyorquina, y de la que nosotros los Puertorriqueños nos sentimos tan honrados y orgullosos. Este año el Servicio Postal de Estados Unidos sacó un sello de Schomburg por ser figura clave en la creación del movimiento pan - Afro Americano de Harlem Renaissance, el cual sirve de precursor directo al novedoso movimiento Black Lives Matters, surgido recientemente como resultado directo de la continua brutalidad policiaca contra los morenos, y avivado por ciertos sectores supremacitas en la política estodounidence. Este movimiento Black Lives Matter, apoyado con entusiasmo por la mayoría de los Puertorriqueños ya comenzó a dar fruto, como lo hemos visto en la reciente eleccion presidencial.

Anverso:

Muestra la figura de Schomburg mirando hacia la estrella solitaria brillándole con esplendor, bajo lo cual aparece un bolígrafo y en cursivo uno de sus primeros logros, la Sociedad para el estudo de la historia Afro Americana, en 1911. Al lado contrario aparece una bandera Boricua en forma de isla, sobre la cual lee: "Afro-Borinqueño", término que él mismo acuñó, y "HARLEM RENAISSANCE" ese gran movimiento del que Schomburg ha sido galardonado con su imagen plasmada en los sellos americanos. Bajo su imagen aparece su fecha de nacimiento en San Juan en 1874 y la de su fallecimiento en New York en 1938, con las palabras "Educador, Historiador, Activista"

Reverso:

Aparece el logo de Black Lives Matter y la fecha 2020 debajo del escudo de la Unión Americana rodeado de ramas de laurel y coronado por una estrella, resultado de su victoriosa Guerra Civil y consecuente abolición de la esclavitud. Todo lo cual es rodeado por la célebre prosa de Schomburg, que aparece escrita abajo en la sección azul oscuro en inglés.

Especificaciones:

Medalla un poco mas grande que un dólar de plata, y con borde acanalado, tamaño 40 mm x 5 mm, y peso de 1 onza, en aleación de bronce cubierto en brilloso cobre rojizo, y con detalles en pintura de esmalte, y excelente terminación sin circular casi "flor de cuño" proof like. Viene encapsulada en una pieza de fuerte plástico protector contra rayazos. La tirada total es de 100 piezas enumeradas individualmente. El idioma es el inglés, medio entendido por todo Boricua, pero que sólo hablan los Afro-Americanos, a quienes se homenajean en esta pieza.

Howdy!
This auction is for one (1) Silver Dollar sized medal commemorating the life of the Puerto Rican born Arturo Alfonso Schomburg, a great African American Educator and Activist who became a key figure in what is now gloriously remembered as the Harlem Renaissance, a local movement born in New York city to fight against injustice to the minorities and for promoting equal rights, which spread like wild fire across the whole United States and became the main voice for the equal treatment of African Americans. This year of 2020 The United States Postal Service paid homage to the key contributors to the Harlem Renaissance movement, to include Puerto Rico's Arturo Alfonso Schomburg. As a total coincidence, and totally separate from this issue, - but intrinsically related - A series of Police brutality acts across America, some of them clearly blessed by certain political groups in Washington D.C. with not so hidden supremacist agendas, which propelled a populist movement of African Americans known today as the BLACKS LIVES MATTER, which has gained the favor and respect of all Hispanics and other minority groups living in America, and whose efforts are already paying off, as shown on this November 2020 election results. For this reason, we salute all the African American Community, to say PUERTO RICO IS WITH YOU.

OBVERSE:
It features one of Arturo Schomburg's most recognizable images, which feature's him smartly dressed, and elegantly poised. (from what I researched, Mr. Schomburg always payed a lot of attention to always dress and look sharp, his purpose not at all to call anyone's attention, never flashy, but impressive enough to command full respect of anyone around his presence. The top of his medal features his full name, and the image looks towards a shining star, below which is a writing pen with the words: "Negro Society for Historical Research, 1911" (one of his earliest big accomplishments). At the opposite side it reads "HARLEM RENAISSANCE" and below is an artistic image of the flag of Puerto Rico in the shape of the main island, on top of which it reads: "Afro-Borinqueño" which is a name he coined to call Puerto Rican's of African descent. Below Schomburg's portrait it reads: San Juan Puerto Rico, January 24, 1874, New York, June 10, 1938. Educator * Historian * (African American) Activist".

REVERSE:
The center images depicts at the top the United States Union Shield of the Great Republic, (Union as in "The North" during the Civil War) and symbolizing freedom from slavery, surrounded by a wreath of olives (symbolizing everlasting Victory) and crowned with a five pointed Star. Below is the Black Lives Matter logo with a raised hand ending in a closed fist. Below is the year 2020. On top of the hand goes serial number that each medal has. Then, surrounding the rest of the space in interconnected concentric circles, is one of Arturo Alfonso Schomburg's most widely known poems which has been dissected and replicated again and again by all famous African - American Activists accross United States History since then, and which holds so true to this day:
" THE AFRICAN - AMERICAN MUST REBUILD HIS PAST IN ORDER TO MAKE HIS FUTURE. THOUGH IT IS ORTHODOX TO THINK ABOUT AMERICA AS THE COUNTRY WHERE IT IS UNNECESSARY TO HAVE A PAST, WHAT IS A LUXURY FOR THE NATION AS A WHOLE, BECOMES A PRIME SOCIAL NECESSITY FOR THE AFRICAN - AMERICAN. FOR HIM A GROUP TRADITION MUST SUPPLY COMPENSATION FOR PERSECUTION, AND PRIDE OF RACE THE ANTIDOTE TO PREJUDICE. HISTORY MUST RESTORE WHAT SLAVERY TOOK AWAY, FOR IT IS THE SOCIAL DAMAGE OF SLAVERY THAT THE PRESENT GENERATION MUST REPAIR AND OFFSET " 

DATA SPECIFICS:
This large medal, which is slighlty bigger than a Morgan Silver Dollar, and has reeded edge, measures 40mm x 5mm, has a weight of 1 ounce. It is made of solid bronze alloy clad in brilliant Copper, resulting in an astonishing red brilliance. It has a superb finish an almost "Proof - Like" quality uncirculated condition, has color enameled details, and comes in its protective plastic capsule, to save it from scratches. There is a total mintage of a mere 100 pieces, each serially numbered, as shown in the photos.

SCHOMBURG'S BIOGRAPHY:

Arturo Alfonso Schomburg (January 24, 1874 – June 10, 1938), was a historian, writer, and activist. Schomburg was a Puerto Rican of African and German descent who moved to the United States and researched and raised awareness of the great contributions that Afro-Latin Americans and Afro-Americans have made to society. He was an important intellectual figure in the Harlem Renaissance. Over the years, he collected literature, art, slave narratives, and other materials of African history, which were purchased to become the basis of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, named in his honor, at the New York Public Library (NYPL) branch in Harlem.

EARLY YEARS:

Schomburg was born in the town of Santurce in the Captaincy General of Puerto Rico, to Mary Joseph, a freeborn black midwife from St. Croix in the Danish West Indies, and Carlos Federico Schomburg, a merchant and son of a German immigrant to Puerto Rico. While Schomburg was in grade school, one of his teachers claimed that black people had no history, heroes or accomplishments. Inspired to prove the teacher wrong, Schomburg determined that he would find and document the accomplishments of Africans on their own continent and in the diaspora.

Schomburg was educated at San Juan's Instituto Popular, where he learned commercial printing. At St. Thomas College on the island of St. Thomas in the Danish West Indies, he studied Negro literature.

PUERTO RICO INDEPENDENCE ADVOCATE:

Schomburg immigrated to New York City on April 17, 1891, and settled in the Harlem section of Manhattan. He continued his studies to untangle the African thread of history in the fabric of the Americas. After experiencing racial discrimination in the US, he began calling himself "Afroborinqueño" which means "Afro-Puerto Rican". He became a member of the "Revolutionary Committee of Puerto Rico" and became an active advocate of Puerto Rico's and Cuba's independence from Spain.

MARRIAGE AND FAMILY:

On June 30, 1895, Schomburg married Elizabeth Hatcher of Staunton, Virginia. She had come to New York as part of a wave of migration from the South that would increase in the 20th century and be known as the Great Migration. They had three sons: Máximo Gómez (he was named after the Dominican military leader of the Cuban struggle for independence); Arthur Alfonso, Jr. and Kingsley Guarionex Schomburg (his middle name was the name of a renowned Taíno Indian cacique).

After Elizabeth died in 1900, Schomburg married Elizabeth Morrow Taylor of Williamsburg, a village in Rockingham County, North Carolina. They were married on March 17, 1902, and had two sons: Reginald Stanton and Nathaniel José Schomburg.  After Elizabeth Morrow Taylor's death he married Elizabeth Green with whom he had three more children.

CAREER:

In 1896, Schomburg began teaching Spanish in New York. From 1901 to 1906 Schomburg was employed as messenger and clerk in the law firm of Pryor, Mellis and Harris, New York City. In 1906, he began working for the Bankers Trust Company. Later, he became a supervisor of the Caribbean and Latin American Mail Section, and held that until he left in 1929.

While supporting himself and his family, Schomburg began his intellectual work of writing about Caribbean and African-American history. His first known article, "Is Hayti Decadent?", was published in 1904 in The Unique Advertiser. In 1909 he wrote Placido, a Cuban Martyr, a short pamphlet about the poet and independence fighter Gabriel de la Concepción Valdés.

THE NEGRO SOCIETY FOR HISTORICAL RESEARCH:

In 1911, Schomburg co-founded with John Edward Bruce the Negro Society for Historical Research, to create an institute to support scholarly efforts. For the first time, it brought together African, West Indian, and Afro-American scholars. In 1914, Schomburg joined the exclusive American Negro Academy, becoming, from 1920–1928, the fifth and last President of the organization. Founded in Washington, DC in 1897, this first major African American learned society brought together scholars, editors, and activists to refute racist scholarship, promote black claims to individual, social, and political equality, and publish the history and sociology of African American life.

This was a period of the founding of societies to encourage scholarship in African-American history. In 1915, Dr. Carter G. Woodson co-founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History) and began publishing the Journal of Negro History.

Schomburg became involved in the Harlem Renaissance movement, which spread to other African-American communities in the U.S. The concentration of blacks in Harlem from across the US and Caribbean led to a flowering of arts, intellectual and political movements. He was the co-editor of the 1912 edition of Daniel Alexander Payne Murray's Encyclopedia of the Colored Race.

In 1916 Schomburg published what was the first notable bibliography of African-American poetry, A Bibliographical Checklist of American Negro Poetry.

In March 1925 Schomburg published his essay "The Negro Digs Up His Past" in an issue of Survey Graphic devoted to the intellectual life of Harlem. It had widespread distribution and influence. The autodidact historian John Henrik Clarke told of being so inspired by the essay that at the age of 17 he left home in Columbus, Georgia, to seek out Mr. Schomburg to further his studies in African history. Alain Locke included the essay in his edited collection The New Negro.

THE SCHOMBURG COLLECTION OF NEGRO LITERATURE AND ART:

The NYPL and the librarian of the 135th Street Branch, Ernestine Rose, purchased his extensive collection of literature, art and other materials in 1926. They appointed Schomburg curator of the Schomburg Collection of Negro Literature and Art, named in his honor, at the 135th Street Branch (Harlem) of the Library. It was later renamed the Arthur Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Between 1931 and 1932 Schomburg served as Curator of the Negro Collection at the library of Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee, helping direct their acquisition of materials. During 1932 he traveled to Cuba. While there he met various Cuban artists and writers, and acquired more material for his studies.

He was granted an honorary membership of the Men's Business Club in Yonkers, New York. He also held the position of treasurer for the Loyal Sons of Africa in New York and was elevated being the past master of Prince Hall Lodge Number 38, Free and Accepted Masons (F.A.M.) and Rising Sun Chapter Number 4, R.A.M.

LATER YEARS:

Following dental surgery, Schomburg became ill and died in Madison Park Hospital, Brooklyn, New York, on June 10, 1938. He is buried in the Locust Grove section. of Cypress Hills Cemetery.

LEGACY:

By the 1920s Schomburg had amassed a collection which consisted of artworks, manuscripts, rare books, slave narratives and other artifacts of Black history. In 1926 the New York Public Library purchased his collection for $10,000 with the help of a grant from the Carnegie Corporation. The collection formed the cornerstone of the Library's Division of Negro History at its 135th Street Branch in Harlem. The library appointed Schomburg curator of the collection, which was named in his honor: the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Schomburg used his proceeds from the sale to fund travel to Spain, France, Germany and England, to seek out more pieces of black history to add to the collection. In 2002, scholar Molefi Kete Asante named Schomburg on his list of 100 Greatest African Americans.

To honor Schomburg, Hampshire College awards a $30,000 merit-based scholarship in his name for students who "demonstrate promise in the areas of strong academic performance and leadership at Hampshire College and in the community.

The College of Arts and Sciences at University at Buffalo also has a fellowship named in honor of Schomburg.

Arturo Alfonso Schomburg's work served as an inspiration to Puerto Ricans, Latinos and Afro-Americans alike. The power of knowing about the great contribution that Afro-Latin Americans and Afro-Americans have made to society, helped continuing work and future generations in the Civil rights movement.
