DMU Tracks

From the 1980s onwards, Video 125’s cameras have roamed the country filming our renowned Driver’s eye views. Although filmed in standard definition, the sound has always been recorded in high definition. Throughout that time we were using full broadcast quality microphones and recording equipment, giving us a unique opportunity to reproduce the sounds of first generation diesel multiple units (DMUs) going about their workaday business.

As well as first generation DMUs such as the ubiquitous class 101, we see single units, 2, 3 and 4 car trains of various combinations, many hotchpotches lashed together to make up serviceable trains with a dearth of new rolling stock towards the end of BR. There are units on main lines and branch lines mainly in blue and grey and Network SouthEast livery. We’ve also included a few preserved units in green. There’s also a section on DEMUs (Diesel Electric Multiple Units) with their unique and distinctive sound – brilliant in stereo!

Many shots have never been seen before, others may be familiar from our Driver’s eye views but were hitherto cut short. We’ve purposely allowed some shots to linger long to create the nostalgic atmosphere of these never to be forgotten DMUs in BR service.
