6.25" x 9.25", 159 page hardcover with dustjacket titled THE ROAR OF THE CROWD by W.R. Burnett/ Clarkson N. Potter, Inc., First Printing, copyright 1964/ W.R. Burnett takes a break from his gritty noir fiction (Little Caesar, High Sierra, The Asphalt Jungle) to bask in the world of Baseball from the point of view of an old timer, and it is a very pleasant season's opener, full of educated savvy, affection, and humor. His ""old timer"" discusses all kinds of players; managers; umpires; the sportswriter (the average fan knows more); Ring Lardner -- the Shakespeare of baseball; bonuses; slumps; and some of the classic remarks that have been made on and off the field. Along with the illustrations by Russell Hoban and the introduction by Frankie Frisch, this should go right down the middle to any fan who has traded or flipped bubblegum cards.  "Opinions about baseball”, including "The superstition of the .300 hitter", "On the Value of Pitching” and more. Much commentary on the (then) contemporary baseball of the early 1960s and how it was inferior to baseball of the past.

The book itself is complete and in FINE condition with some overall light wear. There is a name sticker on the inside of the front cover. The dustjacket is in FAIR - GOOD condition with some tears and small pieces missing along the top and bottom edge. (see pictures). I've protected the dustjacket with a Brodart clear mylar cover.
