these were from my own personal collection
These labels were pasted on the ends of
wooden crates packed with oranges lemons apples and other fruits and
vegetables. These colorful crates were shipped nationwide via the railway
system to be sold in the local markets. Packers and growers would order labels
from printing companies that specialized in this work, these companies employed
commercial artists in large numbers. The artists were not paid well, and rarely
received any acknowledgment for their creations. Most commercial use of labels
ended during WWII due to commodity rationing and shortages. The cardboard box
was adapted to ship fruit and labels were almost completely phased out by the
1950s.
A few words about condition... There are no specific criteria for judging the condition of fruit crate labels. What is "mint" to one seller, may only be "very good" to another. In our auctions, we note a general overall condition such as "excellent", after which we tell you exactly what we see, taking great pains to mention any and all flaws - no matter how slight.
