THIS IS A COPIED PRINT OF AN ORANGE  LABEL

these were from my own personal collection

These labels were pasted on the ends of wooden crates packed with oranges lemons apples and other fruits and vegetables. These colorful crates were shipped nationwide via the railway system to be sold in the local markets. Packers and growers would order labels from printing companies that specialized in this work, these companies employed commercial artists in large numbers. The artists were not paid well, and rarely received any acknowledgment for their creations. Most commercial use of labels ended during WWII due to commodity rationing and shortages. The cardboard box was adapted to ship fruit and labels were almost completely phased out by the 1950s

A few words about condition... There are no specific criteria for judging the condition of fruit crate labels. What is "mint" to one seller, may only be "very good" to another. In our auctions, we note a general overall condition such as "excellent", after which we tell you exactly what we see, taking great pains to mention any and all flaws - no matter how slight. Vintage paper, even under the best of storage conditions, may have some tiny

All Labels will be shipped between cardboard for their protection.
