Service Manual (1962)
Out-of-print, hard-to-find paperback book, with nearly 300 pages, from the Grizzly Brake Division, Chicago, Paulding OH.

Asbestos References:

Asbestos is not mentioned in this book but please read on. However it is common knowledge that Grizzly brake linings contained asbestos during this time period. In fact I have catalogs on eBay that prove it. Also note brake linings and disc pads made before the 1990's commonly contain asbestos, a known carcinogen that cause mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer.

This book is a service manual that trains mechanics on how to perform brake service on passenger car hydraulic brake systems from 1950 to 1962 as well as factory installed power brake systems from 1955 to 1962 but could have been used for training for several years afterwards since these brake systems were typically used for many more years.

It states to "Use dry compressed air to blow out all dirt from brake drums, brake shoes, and brake backing plates." There's no warning about asbestos dust and there is no mention of using respiratory protection. Since asbestos brake linings were commonly used in this time period and beyond, the harmful effects of asbestos dust released from using compressed air to be breathed into mechanics lungs would be unavoidable.

On the last page is an advertisement for Grizzly brake linings including DD Silvertip, Saftibond, Syncro and Tru-Guard. All of which are known to have used asbestos in the friction material of the brake lining. I have catalogs on eBay that prove it.

Book Condition:
The book is in GOOD condition!! The book has normal wear from use. The pages have some browning due to age. There may be a few locations of writing but nothing drastic. It's still a useful book with some life left in it!!
