Australian $2 Coloured Coin Collection 2012 - 2022 Folder

Australia introduced $2 coins into circulation in 1988, replacing the $2 note. At the time, bank notes were lasting only six months due to wear and tear, whereas a coin can last for more than 30 years in circulation.

Horst Hahne designed the $2 coin, featuring the Southern Cross and a representation of an Aboriginal tribal Elder. The coin has a diameter of 20.5mm, a mass of 6.6g and is made of an alloy consisting of 92% copper, 6% aluminium and 2% nickel. It might look like gold but costs far, far less. A smaller and thicker coin size was chosen so that the vision impaired could easily identify it. Since 1988 the Mint has produced over 900 million $2 coins.

In 2012 the Mint released Australia's first ever coloured $2 coin to commemorate Remembrance Day. This special coin featured a red poppy on its reverse and only half a million were made, so it is very rare! Many other military themed coloured $2 coins have followed for circulation including the 2015 In Flanders Fields, the 2017 Rosemary for Remembrance and the 2018 Armistice Centenary coins.

Australia's highest denomination (and second smallest) circulating coin has told many of our stories over the decades, and will continue to tell even more into the future. Can you find them all?
