Each of these volumes was inscribed and signed for Louis D. Rubin, Jr., Eisenhower's friend and mentor. Rubin (1923-2013) was an American Literary scholar, writer, poet, critic, and teacher, who taught for many years at Hollins College (now University) and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is credited with helping establishing Southern literature as a legitimate field in American literature and the founding of Algonquin Press which has become nationally known for publishing Southern authors.
