Nomex is extremely heat resistant. It chars at 600° F ( 315° C ), begins to decompose at 700° ( 357° C ), and does not melt. This makes Nomex a great thread for safety garments such as fire fighting gear, automobile racing suits, and flight suits where there is potential high heat exposure.

Important - Safety garments are mostly fabric and other materials and thread is a very small part of the garment. If these other materials are significantly less or more heat resistant than the thread, overall safety will be compromised. Please note that fire retardant is NOT fire-proof. For example, these threads will burn when exposed to a 2500°F (1357°C) cigarette lighter.

Strength - Nomex is strong enough for sewing seams on clothing and other projects that require normal thread strength. For example, the break strength for a middleweight ( Size 92 ) Nomex is about 9 pounds. This compares to 15 pounds for non-fire retardant nylon and polyester and 35 pounds for fire retardant Kevlar. Bottom line, Nomex is the best choice for normal fire retardant sewing.

Physical characteristics provided are for comparative purposes only, final determination of suitability is the sole responsibility of the user. All physical data listed above is based on current averages and should NOT be used as minimum requirements

Advantages:

·         Excellent resistance to long term heat exposure

·         Superior abrasion resistance

·         Good resistance to most organic solvents.

·         Age has limited effect on physical properties.

·         Available in natural (white) and colors

Kevlar is inherently flame resistant, but can be ignited (limited oxygen index of 29). Burning usually stops when the ignition source is removed; however pulp or dust, once ignited, may continue to smolder.

I have attempted to match the colors of the threads as closely as possible. However, due to monitor differences and other limitations, the actual color of the thread may be slightly different than displayed.
