I AM LIQUIDATING MY 50 YEARS OF SCALE COLLECTION.
This particular scale may be called a gold pocket scale or a coin scale or travel balance. It is from the early to mid 1800’s. Scales were used by prospectors to weigh their gold finds and to aid trading. They were popular  and used to weigh coins to detect shaving small amounts of gold off by cheaters.   This scale was purchased out of the museum of central Idaho that closed down in 1960. Many of the scales from there were used in the gold rush era Circa 1849 as well as by the railroad workers as the transcontinental railroad crossed the Rocky Mountains between 1863 and 1869. The primitive handmade metal (likely from candy or tobacco tin)  box is 6“ x 3“ x 1 1/4“.  4 brass weights ( 1/2 ounce - one ounce and two two ounces) are included in their original wood compartments The iron steelyard is 5 3/4 inches long the drop bar is 2 inches tall, the brass pans are 2 1/2 inch diameter brass and supported by cloth strings that appears original.  There is great patina on the box and scale, some nicks, pits and scratches and wear holes commensurate with a 200 year old antique.

I have several other antique scales to choose from in other listings, as well as other weight sets  - check them out.  I am putting more up every time I get a chance.  Do not feel like you are offending me by making a low offer, I am pricing these at what I geel they are worth, if you feel otherwise please let me know.  Thank you for looking.
