I have done best to keep prices reasonable, but gas and electricity have increased massively
as you know, along with postal costs up by 40% !! )

Apologies, I had to withdraw the collars as they were catching on the platter.
Some are 3.8mm which is fine, but some are 4.0mm which just catches. I need to
get them all on the lathe and machine the centres so I can guarantee they are all
clear. Should be ready in another week or so, it's a rather large batch.

This is my Main Bearing Mod for the Goldring Lenco GL75 etc bearings.
Inspired by Joly & Wer in LencoHeaven (& with their permission to use ideas),

I present a low cost bearing mod to make an oiltight seal and add better

quality components to the main bearing in the Lenco GL75/78 and similar GL
tables (not the light pressed steel platter TTs). Single platter kit.

This mod uses a linear bearing slide flange which clamps onto the

base of the bearing shaft, then the cavity is filled with oil and

a 1mm silicone rubber disc covers this, plus a 55x30x5mm aluminium

plate, bolted to the flange. On the inside, I'm adding a 5mm silicon

nitride ball bearing and a 1mm POM thrust pad made by me. I can
also offer a PEEK thrust pad for double platters, see other items
for more info.

The results to date are quite amazing with bearing noise floor

dropping to almost nil, and it also makes the bearing oiltight & a lot

better on oil use ! Please note there may be a slight hiss from the

thrust pad until it beds in with the ball bearing, this is normal.

One DIY Kit, comprising one "flange", one aluminium plate,

2 nuts and bolts, one silicone rubber disc, one thrust pad 1mm

POM, one 5mm silicon nitride ball bearing, one

small bottle of cleaner, one small bottle of bearing oil.

You will need paper towel and cotton buds and the tools

necessary to remove and replace the parts including circlip pliers.

You will need the knowledge & skill to remove the main bearing, do

the mod and replace the bearing. If you would prefer me

to do the fitting, it will be £47 plus return post.

Instructions

OK, first, take out the small screw half way down the shaft, keep it safe. Invert

the bearing, and remove the clip that keeps the thrust pad in place, keep this VERY safe !

Turn the bearing the right way up and the old pad and metal plate will

drop out, if they don’t, just gently insert the spindle and push them out.

Clean the metal plate, the spindle and the inside of the bearing with cotton buds

and IPA. Remove the old steel ball from the bottom of the spindle and clean the cup area.

Once all the old oil and gunk (if any) has been removed and the

bearing shaft and spindle cleaned, you can re-assemble.

Add the main flange to the base of the shaft so that it is flush with the bottom
See pics for orientation. **IMPORTANT** Tighten the bolt of the flange, not too
tightly, just enough to hold it in place. If you over-tighten it you will restrict
the rotation of the spindle.

Invert the bearing, insert the new thrust pad, if it’s PEEK, any writing should be facing

you, the polished side should contact the spindle ball. Replace the metal plate. Replace

the spring clip. If it's the 5.5mm PEEK you do not need the metal plate or clip.

Ideally you need a small clamp for this part – or three hands – holding the pillar

vertical, and upside down, add drops of the oil into the bottom cavity until it very

nearly overflows. Then place the silicone rubber disc over the oil, with no air

bubbles. Add the aluminium billet and clamp into place with the two 6mm bolts and nuts

as tightly as you can.

Once the base piece is in place, add the spindle, and VERY gently, tighten the flange

bolt as tightly as you can but before it constricts any movement of the spindle in the

shaft of the bearing. Gently does it. If you over tighten the flange you will stop the
spindle rotating.

Once the base is secure, turn the bearing the right way up, remove the spindle, and

add oil until it starts to come out of the hole half way up the shaft (where that

screw fits). Replace the steel ball bearing on the end of the spindle with the grey

silicon nitride ball using a small drop of oil in the cup to hold the ball in place.

Replace the spindle and allow it to settle into the shaft. You will need to help it on its
way towards the end, and oil should come out of the screw hole half way down the
shaft. You will need some force, but gently.

Once the spindle is fully home, you can add more oil into the screw hole if needed. Once
you cannot get any more oil in, fit the screw, making sure that it sits in the cut-out on

the spindle, the spindle should be free to rotate but should not pull out, the screw

prevents this. You are now ready to rock and roll. Re fit the bearing to the top plate
with the bearing support collar on the top plate.

Make sure that the notch in the top of the bearing housing sits next to the motor.
See the photo for orientation and wiring. Make sure mains cables are routed cleanly.
You should also move the chocolate block connector on the motor to the right to allow
space for the mod kit.

and finally fitted it a couple of weeks later. I bought the 5.5mm
PEEK pad kit and installing the mod took no more than about 30 minutes.
The change in sound was immediately noticeable. The improvement
is not a small difference, noise from the bearing has disappeared
and my turntable is now practically silent. I have also noticed that it
holds speed much steadier at 33.3 (measured with digital tacho).
The soundstage is wider and a lot more detail is coming through,

"I got David's bearing mod a few weeks ago. I was lucky to have two
bearings and ordered both the POM and PEEK pads to compare.
First test was theoriginal bearing vs. POM. I didn't fill up the bearings
with oil. The POM bearing sounded better with more music and silence
(dynamics). Next test was adding the clamp/bottom part. This was a
big improvement. It's bigger than a cartridge change, but on another
evel. More music, bigger soundstage, better low and especially
highs. I was surprised by the effect this had. Next test was changing to
the PEEK pad. Another improvement similar to the change to POM.
I suspect it's a combination of the material and the removal of the metal pad
and circlip. The final test was topping the bearing up with oil and re-tighten
the clamp. Now the sound character seemed to change. It was better, but
also a bit more dry. I am very cautious of this effect, because it spoils
the music/rhythm. I had the experience that sometimes it's a break-in
problem. Luckily this was the case. It sounds very good and musical now.
The Lenco is like an instrument where each part influences the sound
and you can tune/tweak it like a system.

I can fully recommend this mod. I am curious how it compares to the
other bearing mods. For the price the improvement is unbelievable.

applied to a GL78. I received the kit by post, well packed,

well laid out and promptly too. Tick! Taking out the packaging,

it's clearly laid out, individually packed up and evidently well

made. I was surprised how snug the fittings were. Anyway,

the old bearing came out simply and set to modding it with

the bits supplied. Instructions are spot on a easy to follow,

just need to take heed of the 'important' bits as alignments

are not immediately realised. Getting the thrust plate clip out
